Adidas Smoking Campaign Essay Adidasââ¬â¢s latest anti-smoking campaign features three cigarette butts layed out in a white background in the style of its logo, which includes their motto ââ¬Å"impossible is nothingâ⬠. As one of the largest suppliers of athletic gear, Adidas looks to not only promote greater advantages in sports recreation, but also in good health. The communicator in the ad is the company Adidas, the primary audience would be smokers out there, but this message also applies to all athletes and athletic individuals. The message and purpose of the ad includes the fact that people who are smoking always have the option to quit, and as their motto implies, ââ¬Å"impossible is nothingâ⬠. Normally, their motto is attributed to the fact that it is not impossible to try new things and go new depths in sports, and in this case it is saying that it is not impossible to quit smoking. Indeed, Adidas argues a valid point, sending a positive message to society, and one should strive to spread a similar message. Accordingly, the ad campaign utilizes a series of rhetorical strategies to successfully grasp the readerââ¬â¢s attention. These rhetorical strategies involved in the ad are what make it a powerful message. Primarily, the visual representation is setup to make the message really clear. The ad brushes upon the pathos aspect of rhetoric to grab the viewerââ¬â¢s attention. Making a statement such as ââ¬Å"impossible is nothingâ⬠and displaying the butt ends of lit out three cigarettes with one cigarette three quarters of the way lit finished, to the second that is almost finished to the filter, and the third that is finish all the way. See more: Old Age Problem essay This is done purposely as practically everyone recognizes the Adidas logo, and can instantly perceive the message behind the ad. The ethos, or the aspect of credibility in this ad lies in the fact that Adidas is a big brand name, its products are widely purchased all over the world and its motto is recognized globally. In this respect, the audience witnesses two different ideas being presented to them at the same time: the symbolism behind the Adidas logo that allows the viewer to conjure the image of sports, and the lit out cigarette butts in association with their motto, which make it quite clear that this is an anti-smoking campaign. Their message as a sports team is the fact that ââ¬Å"impossible is nothingâ⬠, and this concept is meant to apply to dedicating to new endeavors in sports, and is quite often applied to life in general. In this specific ad campaign, smoking is not impossible. Surely, quitting smoking is most certainly possible and there are many living examples of them today. For instance, my interview with Michael Dempster, a sophomore at Drexel University proves that it is in fact quite possible to quit smoking. Michael mentioned that ever since he got involved with the different sports programs offered at Drexel, such as intramural basketball and the gym that is available for convenient hours during the day and night, he was smoking less and less until the habit completely left him. It is inspiring and appropriate in the sense that Michaelââ¬â¢s story applies to the topic of sports and athletics and how there is an inverse correlation between sports and smoking. One promotes good health while the other mars it. Michael mentions ââ¬Å"it felt pretty good to lay off the smoking, and getting involved in an active lifestyleâ⬠(Dempster). He adds that ââ¬Å"smoking always made (him) feel short of breathâ⬠while a good dayââ¬â¢s workout ââ¬Å"helped (him) breath more smoothlyâ⬠(Dempster). From the perspective of blogger Zoe Colton, the viewers of the ad ââ¬Å"see the cigarette butts in stagesâ⬠, and implies that ââ¬Å"quitting smoking is a process and should not be all at onceâ⬠(Colton). Colton also feels that the Adidas Company ââ¬Å"promotes healthy image of athletic gearâ⬠and that they ââ¬Å"care about the health of the customersâ⬠. She also mentions how the ad is revealing how it not only ââ¬Å"promotes a smoke-f ree lifestyleâ⬠but it also shows how ââ¬Å"health equals powerâ⬠(Colton). Furthermore, there have been many researches done and papers written regarding the very topic of smoking. According to Terri Pettinger, a researcher in the field of health studies at the Alliant International University, ââ¬Å"Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the worldâ⬠(Pettinger). Not only is this a ubiquitous fact, but it is the one of most commonly ignored health warnings in todayââ¬â¢s society. It is due to these reasons that the audience is being reminded by companies such as Adidas that there are always better alternatives, such as sports. Adidas is known for being a global promoter of health, and often reveal studies that reveal how sports can lead to an increase in oneââ¬â¢s lifespan. Quite interestingly, Pettinger mentions ââ¬Å"smoking accounts for an average reduction in lifespan of 13.2 yearsâ⬠(Pettinger). There are many people out there that have stopped smoking due to a variety of reasons, including societal issues such as second hand smoke which is harmful to the community, and also oneââ¬â¢s family if the habit is common inside households. Of the numerous reasons for people to stop smoking, oneââ¬â¢s own health remains the primary reason for most, and should be a consideration. Adidas touches upon the heart of this issue, by making it personal for the individual viewer, and treating the advert as if it were one of its new sports releases such a shoe or a ball. Just as a new brand name shoe speaks individually to the viewer, and assures him/her that they must own a pair of them, the message of quitting smoking speaks in the same manner. It is important from a young age for each child to realise and understand that each person is different and may have a respectful difference of opinion. The influence of their elders impact a child perspective greatly as of which it is of vast importance to set good values for the child to develop good characteristics becoming a decent member of society. Children are influenced how to behave via their elders, as a child learns via observational skills. Setting a good example of how to behave is important as it can greatly affect the upbringing of the childs behaviour/personality. The childcare setting surroundings should advertise images of positive perception of the world including all cultures as a human race and mother nature. To promote individuality there should also be access to role play, toys, and electronics. Their maybe a Varity of practiced cultures within the childcare setting. Therefore its a good idea to introduce a monthly cultural lesson on any cultures present within the group so children can understand the differences between cultures, using the foods, animals, preparations, weather, clothing is used and why!. The cultural lessons can educate the child to enhance their intellectual/emotional and social development as it influences children to talk about the way they live inviting a group discussion. Achievement days/awards are extremely effective upon the childs self confidence as the award presents the childs achievement/s. An award/award chart leading to an award day may influence the child to work towards the award for self satisfaction of learning or behaviour. The awards day can also be via the involvement of outside activity hobbies, Swimming/dance/football clubs, which can be discussed within the setting, promoting information on possible outside activities permitting children to express their excitement of their achievements. Group work is essential to child social development as it concentrates on communication/structuring ideas/problem solving and compromising with others. Role play is a great way to promote group communication as there has to be discussion/agreement in who plays which role, confidence with discussions, understanding the roll and discussing it and respecting all thoughts/theories. Personal values can be influenced via good routines, interaction within a good/comfortable setting, such as story time, understanding when to listen and the appropriate time to proclaim their thoughts via showing understanding of the concept. Positive/Negative Behaviour From day one a child is effected by his/her environment. As the child develops there are boundaries needed to be put into place to ensure positive behaviour development, as the child understands right from wrong therefore grasps an understanding of the correct responses/actions. without the examples the child can develop negative behaviour and become confused. Boundaries permit the childs understanding of how to behave therefore understand that if rules are not practiced there will be consequences. The child need to understand whats right or wrong as negative action can put others at risk such as pushing another child or smacking/biting. without consequences a child will not comprehend the action is wrong or will take liberties. Rewarding a positive action/praise is a well achieved award or emotion for reaching/gaining credibility at any stage of development/age i.e. If a child is successful with potty training/behaviour or socialising. Awards/praise influence children to achieve/progress goals. The outcome to the award method is so the child eventually doesnt rely on a form of award and continues to proceed with positive actions, this is where a disciplinary act should be put into motion if any negative behaviour become apparent, if the child out steps their boundaries then a cause of action should be solicited; The naughty step (minutes time out for the duration of the childs age) or no favourite food/book to read. If no action is taken the child could proceed with negative behaviour/anger problems. A group discussion of behaviour expectations should be an active source of communication between peers/providers to ensure a friendly/happy/safe environment. Negative behaviour: create a adverse impact on the childcare environment for everyone present. The victim of the situation can become very distressed/upset effecting child/provider. The incident should be addressed (by the provider) as soon as possible as the child/children of cause will be able to comprehend where they have stepped out of line. The provider will have to explain where the child went wrong, as just saying NO will not deliver the insight of what they did wrong. The provider needs to introduce boundaries within the childcare setting to enforces the correct expectation of behaviour. Awarding the child for good behaviour needs to be introduced and is just as important as discipline. Even though negative behaviour is more apparent to good behaviour, applauded good behaviour can encourage children to want recognition/positive response from his/her providers/parents and peers, even though discipline needs to be an active consequence, sometimes on minor instances if the child gains no response then the child will learn he/she wont gain the required attention. Otherwise if little/no good behaviour is acknowledged the child will always feel like they are naughty and lack enthusiasm for improvement. If good behaviour is applauded then this will encourage future good behaviour eventually become a positive impact improving the childs actions. It is imperative to be consistent with the message being preached to the child involving positive/negative behaviour, even a simple mistake can influence the wrong message so clarity/consistency is highly important. A positive attitude from the provider can determine the atmospheres positive or negative vibe, this can create a happy/safe positive environment for the children/providers or a negative/unhappy one. Its of great importance the child feels safe/inspired/happy within their childcare setting. Conflict management between children/adults Unfortunately conflict occurs within every childcare setting, It is the way it is addressed which leads to a positive/negative standard of care. A conflict can be present between children or a child struggling to except the providers authority. John Broadus Watson An American psychologist whom established the psychological school of behaviourism. Watson was the author of Psychological Care of Infant and Child in 1928. Watson believed children should be treated as a young adult. He proclaimed that the inevitable dangers of a mother providing too much love and affection can provide a negative impact upon the childs future, He proclaimed that the love affection response was conditioned love. Impacting the future generations by mentioning Invalidism proclaiming that society doesnt show high affection to the developing older children/young adulthood within the real world, therefore parents/careers should not deliver high expectations of reality. Hes theories were that nobody is born with natural instinct and supporting this theory he believed that all knowledge is gained via interaction with his/her environment and parents should take sole priority for the responsibility they relinquish upon their children. Infomercials and Other Dishonest Commercials The other night I was sitting in front of the television watching a late night show, when a commercial break came on, I instinctively clicked on the remote to flip through the channels to see what else was on. As I surfed through the channels I came across dozens of info-mercials, a commercial for getting a college degree at home, and a few psychic hotline advertisements. I stopped clicking the remote after a while to see what the commercials were selling, and to see how cheep the products were. There were advertisements for how to get a better body, the "fountain of youth" make-up, and the charcoal-less grill. It is amazing what they come up with nowadays. As I continued surfing I came across Sally Struthers trying to sell an "earn your college degree at home" commercial, honestly, how good can that kind of degree be? Then as I kept flipping, I came across the "psychic network of friends" advertisement, just as they were offering a "free psychic reading to first time callers" all that was required was that a certain 1-800 number be dialed and a person could get a reading. Then to show that the reading was accurate, they had people come on and say that their experience with the psychic was "life changing," and that "it was so realâ⬠¦ the psychic knew everything." It is amazing what people will fall for in this day and age. Info-mercials are basically half hour commercials that attempt to sell products to watchers. The products that most info-mercials offer are things that are said to "improve someone's life" but in most cases the products are rip-offs and are an easy way for the manufacturer's to make money. Some of the products include the "AB-flex," a simple rocking seat that is supposed to hold this unearthly power to flatten a persons stomach. The "AB-flex" guarantees to "make it easier to develop stomach muscles, without the assistance of any other machine, in just thirty days" they also claim that "this piece of equipment can make you feel younger and give you more energy." There is also an info-mercial for "the fountain of youth" make-up, the make-up is said to make skin appear younger than it actually is; this product plays off the idea of women hating to gr... ...s reliant on "their own personal psychic" for information about their future life, there is almost no turning back. These hotlines, I have to admit, are a really good money maker. Who would not want to know what is going to happen to themselves in the future? It would tempt even the most rational person to call up the number to get a glimpse into their future. The world is not longer filled with honest people. All that people are out for nowadays is money, and they will do anything to get it, even if it means lying, deceiving, and bribing people into things; They will stop at nothing. Salespeople reason this by that if the people that are watching are gullible enough to buy or call, then they deserve to be ripped-off. Honesty in sales no longer exists, it has been replaced by lying and cheating. Consumers are no longer safe from these deceivers, instead they must arm themselves with knowledge and common-sense. For some people this may be a challenge, they have already been drawn into the trap of these liars, and it is difficult for them to escape the trap, but if we are to survive in this new world of dishonest people, then we must be armed.

Robber Barons in America What is a robber baron? Websterââ¬â¢s New Dictionary defines it as an American capitalist of the late 19th century who became wealthy through exploitation (As of natural resources, governmental influence, or low wage scales) or a person who satisfies himself by depriving another. In America we had a lot of these kind of people. For this report I am going to tell you about the ones that I found most interesting to me. I would first like to tell you about Cornelius Vanderbilt. Cornelius Vanderbilt was born in Port Richmond on Staten Island, N. Y. in 1794. Cornelius at the age of 16 had already stepped into the busniess world and he didnââ¬â¢t even know it. At 16 he entered into the steamboat business when he established a freight and passenger service between Stanton Island and Manhattan. Little did Cornelius know this would be one of the key ways he would make his millions upon millions. Cornelius entered the steamer business in 1818, and bought his first steamship in 1829. Cornelius was not a laid back guy nothing was ever good enough for him. If you had and Cornelius Vanderbilt wanted it there wasnââ¬â¢t much you could do to keep him from getting it. This is the kind of attitude that put him on top of the world. After establishing his steamboat Vanderbilt became a very vigorous competitor, lowering his rates while also making his ships top of the line. Vanderbilt the entrepuner himself soon controlled must of the Hudson River. After awhile his f ellow competitors in the steamboat business paid him to take some of his traffic elsewhere so that he wouldnââ¬â¢t get all the work. By 1846 Vanderbilt was a very wealthy man and with wealth he learned cam power. He became widely know as the Commodore Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt sold his steamboats in 1862 and began buying railroad stocks. In a mere 5 years Vanderbilt used his power to uphold most of the New York Central Railroad system. Vanderbilt like in his steamboats strived to be the best in the railroads now. Vanderbilt established many railway systems during his railroad career maybe his most famous was that of the one that connected New York and Chicago in a direct rail route in 1873. At the time of Vanderbiltââ¬â¢s death in 1877 he was worth over 100 million dollars the most at that time. Another questionable hard workingman is that of John Davison Rockefeller. The television king Robert Edward Turner III who was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1938. Turner who was educated at the Georgia Military Academy and Brown Universitey. Turner had a major set back in his life after his dad committed suicide. He inherited the family billboard-advertising business. In 1970 Turner had bought a failing television station in Atlanta, Georgia and by 1975 he had transformed it in to one of the leading stations.. He did this by showing low-cost sports and entertainment programs via satellite to cable systems throughout the country. In 1976 Turner bought the baseball team the Atlanta braves and then the next year he bought the Atlanta Hawks In 1980 Turner invented Cable News Network(CNN) the first 24 hour news station. In 1988 he launched Turner Network Television(TNT). Then in 1991 Turner married the actress Jane Fonda. Turner now at the age of 63 still owns all his companies. I would have to say that after doing this report I learned that no matter how you earn the money you just have to have it to be successful.

Islamic State in Iraq and Syria Essay
Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is one of the biggest threats the Middle East is facing right now. ISIS started in Iraq in 2004 where a person called Abu Musab Al-Zarkawy established Al Qaeda in Iraq. During his time as Al Qaeda leader in Iraq Al-Zarkawy tries to make genocide against the Shiaa (another Islamic belief) population living in Iraq, eventually Al-Zarkawy gets killed by a US airstrike and Abu Ayub Al-Masri takes over and announces the formation of Islamic State in Iraq at that time. Al-Masri also gets killed by in a joint American-Iraqi operation and then Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi (the current leader) takes over. In April 2013 ISI declares that it will join with Al Nusra front in Syria (Another terrorist organization and Syria) forming the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. Later that month Al-Nusra leader rejects that merge, and then AL-Qaeda broke ties with ISIS for being too extreme. ISIS aims to make an Islamic Sunni state across Iraq and Syria. ISIS is known for doing a lot of atrocities to its victims including public executions and group murder. ISIS has many victims including the Shiaa population, the Christian population, and any Sunni who dares to oppose their views or ideologies. The group has beheaded three American journalists until now and will do it again if it finds another foreign journalist. The so called Islamic state controls hundreds of square miles and still till this moment trying to capture more lands by attacking villages and cities. The groups at first tried to make money by extortion and robbery but now he gains money by capturing cities. ISIS till now has about ten thousand followers. ISIS is not only a human rights and political issue it is also a huge economical issue in the Middle East. The ambassador of Italy in Saudi Arabia, Mario Boffo said ââ¬Å"I hope this phenomenon will disappear as soon as possible, because it can affect the regionââ¬â¢s economy if the situation lasts for another year, Investors will be scared to come not only to Saudi Arabia but also other countries in the region,â⬠As Boffo said the ISIS economical threat in the Middle East isnââ¬â¢t only in Saudi Arabia, it is also in the Arab states, especially those who are in the GCC. The Arab states in the GCC are spending billions of dollars on infrastructures that require international labor and international expertise. Therefore Italy, America, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE formed a coalition to respond to the ISIS threat in Iraq and Syria without sending troops on the ground. Although the ISIS threat is far away from the United States of America we will have some economic problems. As we all know the Middle East is the most part in the world that exports oil to the world including the United States of America. If the ISIS threat grows and stretches to places like Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia then the oil industry might enter in a worldwide oil disaster. If the ISIS threats continue the oil price in the world market will rise causing the price of oil here in the US to rise as well. In my opinion ISIS is a threat we should face sooner than later because in every day we lose innocent lives are being taken the more economic problems we will have.

Forward the Foundation Chapter 20
22 Yugo Amaryl said, ââ¬Å"Here you are again, Dors.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sorry, Yugo. I'm bothering you twice this week. Actually you don't see anyone very often, do you?â⬠Amaryl said, ââ¬Å"I don't encourage people to visit me, no. They tend to interrupt me and break my line of thought. Not you, Dors. You're altogether special, you and Hari. There's never a day I don't remember what you two have done for me.â⬠Dors waved her hand. ââ¬Å"Forget it, Yugo. You've worked hard for Hari and any trifling kindness we did for you has long been overpaid. How is the Project going? Hari never talks about it-not to me, anyway.â⬠Amaryl's face lightened and his whole body seemed to take on an infusion of life. ââ¬Å"Very well. Very well. It's difficult to talk about it without mathematics, but the progress we've made in the last two years is amazing-more than in all the time before that. It's as though, after we've been hammering away and hammering away, things have finally begun to break loose.â⬠ââ¬Å"I've been hearing that the new equations worked out by Dr. Elar have helped the situation.â⬠ââ¬Å"The achaotic equations? Yes. Enormously.â⬠ââ¬Å"And the Electro-Clarifier has been helpful, too. I spoke to the woman who designed it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Cinda Monay?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. That's the one.â⬠ââ¬Å"A very clever woman. We're fortunate to have her.â⬠ââ¬Å"Tell me, Yugo-You work at the Prime Radiant virtually all the time, don't you?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm more or less constantly studying it. Yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"And you study it with the Electro-Clarifier.â⬠ââ¬Å"Certainly.â⬠ââ¬Å"Don't you ever think of taking a vacation, Yugo?â⬠Amaryl looked at her owlishly, blinking slowly. ââ¬Å"A vacation?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Surely you've heard the word. You know what a vacation is.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why should I take a vacation?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because you seem dreadfully tired to me.â⬠ââ¬Å"A little, now and then. But I don't want to leave the work.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you feel more tired now than you used to?â⬠ââ¬Å"A little. I'm getting older, Dors.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're only forty-nine.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's still older than I've ever been before.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, let it go. Tell me, Yugo-just to change the subject. How is Hari doing at his work? You've been with him so long that no one could possibly know him better than you do. Not even I. At least, as far as his work is concerned.â⬠ââ¬Å"He's doing very well, Dors. I see no change in him. He still has the quickest and brightest brain in the place. Age is having no effect on him-at least, not so far.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's good to hear. I'm afraid that his own opinion of himself is not as high as yours is. He's not taking his age well. We had a difficult time getting him to celebrate his recent birthday. Were you at the festivities, by the way? I didn't see you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I attended part of the time. But, you know, parties of that kind are not the sort of thing I feel at home with.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you think Hari is wearing out? I'm not referring to his mental brilliance. I'm referring to his physical capacities. In your opinion, is he growing tired-too tired to bear up under his responsibilities?â⬠Amaryl looked astonished. ââ¬Å"I never gave it any thought. I can't imagine him growing tired.â⬠ââ¬Å"He may be, just the same. I think he has the impulse, now and then, to give up his post and hand the task over to some younger man.â⬠Amaryl sat back in his chair and put down the graphic stylus he had been fiddling with ever since Dors had entered. ââ¬Å"What! That's ridiculous! Impossible!â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you sure?â⬠ââ¬Å"Absolutely. He certainly wouldn't consider such a thing without discussing it with me. And he hasn't.â⬠ââ¬Å"Be reasonable, Yugo. Hari is exhausted. He tries not to show it, but he is. What if he does decide to retire? What would become of the Project? What would become of psychohistory?â⬠Amaryl's eyes narrowed. ââ¬Å"Are you joking, Dors?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. I'm just trying to look into the future.â⬠ââ¬Å"Surely, if Hari retires, I succeed to the post. He and I ran the Project for years before anyone else joined us. He and I. No one else. Except for him, no one knows the Project as I do. I'm amazed you don't take my succession for granted, Dors.â⬠Dors said, ââ¬Å"There's no question in my mind or in anyone else's that you are the logical successor, but do you want to be? You may know everything about psychohistory, but do you want to throw yourself into the politics and complexities of a large Project and abandon much of your work in order to do so? Actually it's trying to keep everything moving smoothly that's been wearing Hari down. Can you take on that part of the job?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, I can and it's not something I intend to discuss. Look here, Dors. Did you come here to break the news that Hari intends to ease me out?â⬠Dors said, ââ¬Å"Certainly not! How could you think that of Hari! Have you ever known him to turn on a friend?â⬠ââ¬Å"Very well, then. Let's drop the subject. Really, Dors, if you don't mind, there are things I must do.â⬠Abruptly he turned away from her and bent over his work once more. ââ¬Å"Of course. I didn't mean to take up this much of your time.â⬠Dors left, frowning. 23 Raych said, ââ¬Å"Come in, Mom. The coast is clear. I've sent Manella and Wanda off somewhere.â⬠Dors entered, looked right and left out of sheer habit, and sat down in the nearest chair. ââ¬Å"Thanks,â⬠said Dors. For a while she simply sat there, looking as if the weight of the Empire were on her shoulders. Raych waited, then said, ââ¬Å"I never got a chance to ask you about your wild trip into the Palace grounds. It isn't every guy who has a mom who can do that.â⬠ââ¬Å"We're not talking about that, Raych.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well then, tell me. **You're not one for giving anything away by facial expressions, but you look sorta down. Why is that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because I feel, as you say, sorta down. In fact, I'm in a bad mood because I have terribly important things on my mind and there's no use talking to your father about it. He's the most wonderful man in the world, but he's very hard to handle. There's no chance that he'd take an interest in the dramatic. He dismisses it all as my irrational fears for his life-and my subsequent attempts to protect him.â⬠ââ¬Å"Come on, Mom, you do seem to have irrational fears where Dad's concerned. If you've got something dramatic in mind, it's probably all wrong.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you. You sound just like he does and you leave me frustrated. Absolutely frustrated.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well then, unburden yourself, Mom. Tell me what's on your mind. From the beginning.â⬠ââ¬Å"It starts with Wanda's dream.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wanda's dream! Mom! Maybe you'd better stop right now. I know that Dad won't want to listen if you start that way. I mean, come on. A little kid has a dream and you make a big deal of it. That's ridiculous.â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't think it was a dream, Raych. I think what she thought was a dream were two real people, talking about what she thought concerned the death of her grandfather.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's a wild guess on your part. What possible chance does this have of being true?â⬠ââ¬Å"Just suppose it is true. The one phrase that remained with her was ââ¬Ëlemonade death.' Why should she dream that? It's much more likely that she heard that and distorted the words she heard-in which case, what were the undistorted words?â⬠ââ¬Å"I can't tell you,â⬠said Raych, his voice incredulous. Dors did not fail to catch that. ââ¬Å"You think this is just my sick invention. Still, if I happen to be right, I might be at the start of unraveling a conspiracy against Hari right here in the Project.â⬠ââ¬Å"Are there conspiracies in the Project? That sounds as impossible to me as finding significance in a dream.â⬠ââ¬Å"Every large project is riddled with angers, frictions, jealousies of all sorts.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure. Sure. We're talking nasty words and faces and nose thumbing and tale bearing. That's nothing at all like talking conspiracy. It's not like talking about killing Dad.â⬠ââ¬Å"It's just a difference in degree. A small difference-maybe.â⬠ââ¬Å"You'll never make Dad believe that. For that matter, you'll never make me believe that.â⬠Raych walked hastily across the room and back again, ââ¬Å"And you've been trying to nose out this so-called conspiracy, have you?â⬠Dors nodded. ââ¬Å"And you've failed.â⬠Dors nodded. ââ¬Å"Doesn't it occur to you that you've failed because there is no conspiracy, Mom?â⬠Dors shook her head. ââ¬Å"I've failed so far, but that doesn't shake my belief that one exists. I have that feeling.â⬠Raych laughed. ââ¬Å"You sound very ordinary, Mom. I would expect more from you than ââ¬ËI have that feeling.â⬠ââ¬Ë ââ¬Å"There is one phrase that I think can be distorted into ââ¬Ëlemonade.' That's ââ¬Ëlayman-aided.' ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Laymanayded? What's that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Layman-aided. Two words. A layman is what the mathematicians at the Project call nonmathematicians.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well?â⬠ââ¬Å"Suppose,â⬠interjected Dors firmly, ââ¬Å"someone spoke of ââ¬Ëlayman-aided death,' meaning that some way could be found to kill Hari in which one or more nonmathematicians would play an essential role. Might that not have sounded to Wanda like ââ¬Ëlemonade death,' considering that she had never heard the phrase ââ¬Ëlayman-aided' any more than you did, but that she was extraordinarily fond of lemonade?â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you trying to tell me that there were people in Dad's private office, of all places. How many people, by the way?â⬠ââ¬Å"Wanda, in describing her dream, says two. My own feeling is that one of the two was none other than Colonel Hender Linn of the junta and that he was being shown the Prime Radiant and that there must have been a discussion involving the elimination of Hari.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're getting wilder and wilder, Mom. Colonel Linn and another man in Dad's office talking murder and not knowing that there was a little girl hidden in a chair, overhearing them? Is that it?â⬠ââ¬Å"More or less.â⬠ââ¬Å"In that case, if there is mention of laymen, then one of the people, presumably the one that isn't Linn, must be a mathematician.â⬠ââ¬Å"It would seem to be so.â⬠ââ¬Å"That seems utterly impossible. But even if it were true, which mathematician do you suppose might be in question? There are at least fifty in the Project.â⬠ââ¬Å"I haven't questioned them all. I've questioned a few and some laymen, too, for that matter, but I have uncovered no leads. Of course, I can't be too open in my questions.â⬠ââ¬Å"In short, no one you have interviewed has given you any lead on any dangerous conspiracy.â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not surprised. They haven't done so, because-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I know your ââ¬Ëbecause,' Raych. Do you suppose people are going to break down and give away conspiracies under mild questioning? I am in no position to try to beat the information out of anyone. Can you imagine what your father would say if I upset one of his precious mathematicians?â⬠Then, with a sudden change in the intonation of her voice, she said, ââ¬Å"Raych, have you talked to Yugo Amaryl lately?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, not recently. He's not one of your sociable creatures, you know. If you pulled the psychohistory out of him, he'd collapse into a little pile of dry skin.â⬠Dors made a face at the picture and said, ââ¬Å"I've talked to him twice recently and he seems to me to be a little withdrawn. I don't mean just tired. It is almost as though he's not aware of the world.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. That's Yugo.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is he getting worse lately?â⬠Raych thought awhile. ââ¬Å"He might be. He's getting older, you know. We all are. Except you, Mom.â⬠ââ¬Å"Would you say that Yugo had crossed the line and become a little unstable, Raych?â⬠ââ¬Å"Who? Yugo? He has nothing to be unstable about. Or with. Just leave him at his psychohistory and he'll mumble quietly to himself for the rest of his life.â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't think so. There is something that interests him-and very strongly, too. That's the succession.â⬠ââ¬Å"What succession?â⬠ââ¬Å"I mentioned that someday your father might want to retire and it turns out that Yugo is determined-absolutely determined-to be his successor.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not surprised. I imagine that everyone agrees that Yugo is the natural successor. I'm sure Dad thinks so, too.â⬠ââ¬Å"But he seemed to me to be not quite normal about it. He thought I was coming to him to break the news that Hari had shoved him aside in favor of someone else. Can you imagine anyone thinking that of Hari?â⬠ââ¬Å"It is surprising-â⬠Raych interrupted himself and favored his mother with a long look. He said, ââ¬Å"Mom, are you getting ready to tell me that it might be Yugo who's at the heart of this conspiracy you're speaking of? That he wants to get rid of Dad and take over?â⬠ââ¬Å"Is that entirely impossible?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, it is, Mom. Entirely. If there's anything wrong with Yugo, it's overwork and nothing else. Staring at all those equations or whatever they are, all day and half the night, would drive anyone crazy.â⬠Dors rose to her feet with a jerk. ââ¬Å"You're right.â⬠Raych, startled, said, ââ¬Å"What's the matter?â⬠ââ¬Å"What you've said. It's given me an entirely new idea. A crucial one, I think.â⬠Turning, without another word, she left. 24 Dors Venabili disapproved, as she said to Hari Seldon ââ¬Å"You've spent four days at the Galactic Library. Completely out of touch and again you managed to go without me.â⬠Husband and wife stared at each other's image on their holoscreens. Hari had just returned from a research trip to the Galactic Library in Imperial Sector. He was calling Dors from his Project office to let her know he'd returned to Streeling. Even in anger, thought Hari, Dors is beautiful. He wished he could reach out and touch her cheek. ââ¬Å"Dors,â⬠he began, a placating note in his voice, ââ¬Å"I did not go alone. I had a number of people with me and the Galactic Library, of all places, is safe for scholars, even in these turbulent times. I am going to have to be at the Library more and more often, I think, as time goes on.â⬠ââ¬Å"And you're going to continue to do it without telling me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Dors, I can't live according to these death-filled views of yours. Nor do I want you running after me and upsetting the librarians. They're not the junta. I need them and I don't want to make them angry. But I do think that I-we-should take an apartment nearby.â⬠Dors looked grim, shook her head, and changed the subject. ââ¬Å"Do you know that I had two talks with Yugo recently?â⬠ââ¬Å"Good. I'm glad you did. He needs contact with the outside world.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, he does, because something's wrong with him. He's not the Hugo we've had with us all these years. He's become vague, distant, and-oddly enough-passionate on only one point, as nearly as I can tell-his determination to succeed you on your retirement.â⬠ââ¬Å"That would be natural-if he survives me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Don't you expect him to survive you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, he's eleven years younger than I am, but the vicissitudes of circumstance-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"What you really mean is that you recognize that Yugo is in a bad way. He looks and acts older than you do, for all his younger age, and that seems to be a rather recent development. Is he ill?â⬠ââ¬Å"Physically? I don't think so. He has his periodic examinations. I'll admit, though, that he seems drained. I've tried to persuade him to take a vacation for a few months-a whole year's sabbatical, if he wishes. I've suggested that he leave Trantor altogether, just so that he is as far away from the Project as possible for a while. There would be no problem in financing his stay on Getorin-which is a pleasant resort world not too many light-years away.â⬠Dors shook her head impatiently. ââ¬Å"And, of course, he won't. I suggested a vacation to him and he acted as though he didn't know the meaning of the word. He absolutely refused.â⬠ââ¬Å"So what can we do?â⬠said Seldon. Dors said, ââ¬Å"We can think a little. Yugo worked for a quarter of a century on the Project and seemed to maintain his strength without any trouble at all and now suddenly he has weakened. It can't be age. He's not yet fifty.â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you suggesting something?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. How long have you and Yugo been using this Electro-Clarifier thing on your Prime Radiants?â⬠ââ¬Å"About two years-maybe a little more.â⬠ââ¬Å"I presume that the Electro-Clarifier is used by anyone who uses the Prime Radiant.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's right.â⬠ââ¬Å"Which means Yugo and you, mostly?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"And Yugo more than you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Yugo concentrates fiercely on the Prime Radiant and its equations. I, unfortunately, have to spend much of my time on administrative duties.â⬠ââ¬Å"And what effect does the Electro-Clarifier have on the human body?â⬠Seldon looked surprised. ââ¬Å"Nothing of any significance that I am aware of.â⬠ââ¬Å"In that case, explain something to me, Hari. The Electro-Clarifier has been in operation for over two years and in that time you've grown measurably more tired, crotchety, and a little out of touch. Why is that?â⬠** ââ¬Å"I'm getting older, Dors.â⬠ââ¬Å"Nonsense. Whoever told you that sixty is crystallized senility? You're using your age as a crutch and a defense and I want you to stop it. Yugo, though he's younger, has been exposed to the Electro-Clarifier more than you have and, as a result, he is more tired, more crotchety, and, in my opinion, a great deal less in touch than you are. And he is rather childishly intense about the succession. Don't you see anything significant in this?â⬠ââ¬Å"Age and overwork. That's significant.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, it's the Electro-Clarifier. It's having a long-term effect on the two of you.â⬠After a pause, Seldon said, ââ¬Å"I can't disprove that, Dors, but I don't see how it's possible. The Electro-Clarifier is a device that produces an unusual electronic field, but it is still only a field of the type to which human beings are constantly exposed. It can't do any unusual harm. In any case, we can't give up its use. There's no way of continuing the progress of the Project without it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now, Hari, I must ask something of you and you must cooperate with me on this. Go nowhere outside the Project without telling me and do nothing out of the ordinary without telling me. Do you understand?â⬠ââ¬Å"Dors, how can I agree to this? You're trying to put me into a straitjacket.â⬠ââ¬Å"It's just for a while. A few days. A week.â⬠ââ¬Å"What's going to happen in a few days or a week?â⬠Dors said, ââ¬Å"Trust me. I will clear up everything.ââ¬
